Although the term was used widely by Allied (most often British and Commonwealth) servicemen to describe any form of German field artillery shells, the 'whizz bang' was originally attributed to the noise made by shells from German 77mm field guns. Sturmtiger The main armament was the 380 mm Raketen-Werfer 61 L/5.4, a breech-loading rocket launcher, which fired short-range, rocket-propelled projectiles roughly 1.5 m long. There were a variety of rounds with a weight of up to 376 kg, and a maximum range of up to 6,000 m, which either contained a high explosive charge of 125 kg or a shaped charge for use against fortifications, which could penetrate up to 2.5 m of reinforced concrete.
