A German artillery shell embedded in the armor of a Soviet KV-1 tank. It probably came from an early model Panzer IV, which mounted the Kampfwagenkanone 37 L/24 75mm tank gun, a low-velocity cannon mainly designed to fire high-explosive shells. The shell's profile matches the Panzergranate 39. It’s possible that the impact popped out the base fuse which stopped it from detonating. Note the ricochet mark from a prior hit just above it.

Armament: 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 with 54 rounds - Sturmgeschütz units claimed to have knocked out 20,000 tanks by 1944 ! Overall, Sturmgeschütz series assault guns proved very successful and served on all fronts as assault guns and tank destroyers. Although Tigers and Panthers have earned a greater notoriety, assault guns collectively destroyed more tanks. Because of their low silhouette, StuG IIIs were easy to camouflage and a difficult target. image below: 1944 North France, German Sturmgeschüt
