M4A1 Sherman. The main difference between the M4A1 and the original Sherman was the M4A1's 76 mm gun. The increase in caliber was insignificant, but the increase in range and stopping power gave these Shermans a fighting chance. An encounter of equal numbers of Shermans and Panzers was still likely to end in defeat for the Allies, but the Sherman could be built so quickly that their sheer numbers overwhelmed the Germans. Six 105mm recoilless rifles, armor, and a six-cylinder truck engine combined to make the M50 Ontos one of the most lethal light fighting vehicles ever designed. Rejected by the US Army, it nevertheless found a home with the US Marine Corps which appreciated its combination of power and resilience. Throughout the Vietnam War, the Corps used the Ontos to break enemy hard points, disperse attacks on bases, and take out opposing light vehicles.
