The Semovente 90/53 was a heavy Italian self-propelled gun and tank destroyer, used by the Italian and German Armies during World War II. In the North African Campaign, the Semovente 90/53 proved to be an effective weapon and its long range 90 mm cannon was well suited to the flat and open desert terrain.

Although the term was used widely by Allied (most often British and Commonwealth) servicemen to describe any form of German field artillery shells, the 'whizz bang' was originally attributed to the noise made by shells from German 77mm field guns.
